Here are the highlights from the Featured Expert column:
Portfolio Update from August 13
Sonic Solutions to Acquire Consumer Software Division of Roxio
CD and DVD authoring software company Sonic Solutions (NASDAQ:SNIC)
announced a definitive agreement to acquire the consumer software
business of Roxio (NASDAQ:ROXI) in a transaction valued at $80 million.
The acquisition will help Sonic expand its consumer software offers
with Roxio's OEM business and retail store distribution channels.
In the company's last quarterly conference call, Sonic indicated
plans to move into the retail space, either by building its own distribution
network, or through an acquisition. Management indicated that this acquisition
will cut the amount of time necessary to achieve that goal by 12 - 18
months.
Ian Wyatt is pleased to hear about this acquisition, and believes
it will result in more widespread distribution for Sonic's leading
CD and DVD authoring software solutions. Roxio's large installed
base represents a huge opportunity for selling additional products.
He believes this transaction will only put Sonic in a greater position
of strength to dominate the digital media market.
Northern Orion Q2 Results
Copper and gold producer Northern Orion (AMEX:NTO)
this week reported financial results for the second quarter. Earnings
for the quarter were $2.85 million or $0.03 per share versus a
net loss of $1.6 million or $0.07 per share. For the six months,
Northern Orion earned $12 million or $0.11 per share. During the quarter,
Northern Orion increased its ore reserves at the Alumbrera mine, which will
extend the lifetime of the operation by approximately two and a half
years. The company expects to continue generating a significant
amount of cash from the Alumbrera mine during the remainder of
its lifetime that is now estimated to be eight years.
While the quarterly results for Northern Orion represent a decline
on a sequential basis, it is Wyatt's belief that this is a result
of the slight decline in natural resource prices. He is pleased
with the results out of Northern Orion and his outlook remains
unchanged.
Collegiate Forecast
Collegiate Pacific (AMEX:BOO)
reported that it expects a 400 - 500% increase in 4th quarter operating
income. CEO Michael Blumenfeld in a company issued press release
commented that his preliminary review of fourth quarter financial results
indicates revenue growth of "well over 100%," driven by a series of acquisitions
and strong organic growth. He expects results for the first quarter of
FY2005 ending September 30 to "surpass results of the year ago quarter
by a very wide margin."
iMergent To List on American Stock Exchange
iMergent this week announced that the company's application for
listing on the American Stock Exchange has been accepted. Shares
of iMergent will begin trading on the American Stock Exchange on
Monday August 16 under the ticker symbol "IIG." Wyatt is pleased
to see iMergent(AMEX: IIG
- News)
being listed on the American Stock Exchange. He believes this is
an important step for the company, and hopes that the move off
of the OTC Bulletin Board will encourage investment by individual
and institutional investors who are often cautious of investing in stocks
that trade on the OTC BB. Wyatt anxiously awaits the company's upcoming financial
results, and hopes that strong results coupled with this listing will encourage
analyst coverage and institutional investment.
